My family is about to move cross country in a month. We have the freedom to "pick our location" to a certain degree but there is one thing that is a must- have no matter where we move: A good jiu jitsu gym. Training jiu jitsu is a major part of our family life. It's what we do for exercise, for stress-relief, for fun and for work! So picking the right gym is essential.
And unfortunately, finding a great jiu jitsu gym isn't always easy. While an instructor might be a brilliant black belt in jiu-jitsu, it doesn't mean that they are any good at marketing or website design. In fact, we have found some gyms that didn't come up at all when you searched for them through traditional means!
So how do we find a good jiu jitsu gym in an area?
Step 1: Reddit. We have found boards like www.reddit.com/bjj to be invaluable to asking other practitioners where they train. You can usually get the information on who to avoid and who to seek out.
Step 2: Follow the family tree. Lineage is important to us, we have a particular style and promotion method that we like to train under if at all possible. So we always research a gym to find out the lineage of the instructors/school. Like Gracie Barra schools- head over to their main site and do a search for your particular town. How about Gracie Humaita gyms? Or 10th planet gyms near you?
Step 3: Facebook. It seems a little non-conventional, but many gyms like the ease of use that comes with running their business off of facebook. We have found a lot of smaller mma gyms and jiu jitsu gyms by searching on facebook for "jiu jitsu washington" etc....
Step 4: Ask the Grappler's Toolbox Community: We have customers from all of the country that train each and every day. So if you have to relocate for work or pleasure and need to find a place to train Brazilian jiujitsu post a message on our Facebook page asking for referrals. We are always here to help.
